Numa is a community-based aural experience that transmits oral histories, knowledge, and sentiments via sound and movement. Numa is a polyrhythmic, syncopated, polyvocal, and multilingual account of historical trauma. It seeks to center historically marginalized voices to weave them into the ever-growing constellations of narratives, paving the way for emancipatory radical futures while constantly reminding us that healing flourishes in the collective.
At its essence, Numa is an exercise in historical Memory and a form of Afro/indigenous sonic mapping that explores the transformation of some musical traditions developed in Colombia (Vallenato, Bullerengue, and Pasillo), uplifting narratives of musicians forced to live in exile and tracing moments of violence in Latin America and the Caribbean, transmuting them into a celebration of life and a blueprint of resistance. Numa also foretells the cyclical nature of violence in places without Memory and poses unforgetting as an attitude against this repetition.
